DELHI:EROS TIMES: The Transport Department on Wednesday organised a workshop in collaboration with Save LIFE Foundation, a not-for-profit on improving road safety and emergency care across India and the Developing World on Delhi Road Safety Policy.
The objective of the workshop was to sensitize all stakeholders regarding provisions of Delhi Road Safety Policy.
It was attended by different Government stakeholders including officials from Transport Department, PWD , Health Department as well as Delhi Traffic Police.
Sessions were conducted by technical experts on various issues including scientific accident investigation, emergency care, enforcement and enactment.
Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot inaugurated the workshop and stressed the need for collaboration and cooperation between different Government Departments and entities.
Addressing the gathering, Gahlot said, “ Two important tenets of road safety are scientific crash investigation and accountability and through this workshop and Delhi Road Safety Policy we aim to sensitize all stakeholders about their responsibilities in reducing road crash deaths in Delhi.
Delhi Government has set an ambitious target of achieving 30% reduction in road accidents deaths by 2020 and 80% by 2025 and we are committed to achieving this target and to save as many lives as possible.”
Alok Kumar, Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) talked about the need of effective enforcement. “ Enforcement has an impact on behavior and acts as deterrent to bad road user behavior.
Along with enforcement , scientific investigation of crashes will also ensure that factors which lead to road accidents or deaths are attenuated through engineering interventions”.
Piyush Tewari, Founder and CEO Save LIFE Foundation stressed the need for such an event. “Almost fifteen hundred people die in road crashes every year in Delhi and behind these numbers are people and families.
Road Safety is a multi-sect oral issue and to address this issue in Delhi, different government departments and entities including Police, Health Officials and Transport department have now been brought together through this workshop and the initiative of the Delhi Government to launch comprehensive Road Safety Policy.”
