New Delhi:EROS TIMES: December 2019—Delhi Pradesh Mahila Congress, in association with Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee, under the leadership of DPCC president Subhash Chopra, held a massive demonstration to protest against the sky-rocketing prices of onions, due to the shadow boxing between the Modi Government at the Centre and the Kejriwal Government in Delhi, outside the residence of Kejriwal at Civil Lines.
The angry women demonstrators wore onion garlands to register their strong protest. Thousands of women Congress workers from across Delhi participated in the demonstration. When the women Congress workers, along with Subhash Chopra and chief spokesperson Mukesh Sharma, blocked the traffic, police arrested them.
The women demonstrators shouted slogans such as “Jamakhoron par Kason Lagam, Sasthe Karo Pyaj Ke Daam”, “Kejriwal Sharam Karo, Pyaj Ke Dam Kam Karo”, “100 Rupaye Kilo Pyaj, Modi-Kejriwal Andha Raj”, “Modi-Kejriwal Ki Joot, Jamakhoron Ki Pyaj Pe Loot” etc. while they marched towards Kejriwal’s residence, and clashed with the police when the Cops tried to stop them. Later, Subhash Chopra, Mukesh Sharma and the women demonstrators sat on the road. A large police force present arrested the protestors, including Subhash Chopra and Mukesh Sharma, and took them away in police vans. The demonstrators first assembled outside I.P.College and created a major traffic jam.
Addressing the women demonstrators, Subhash Chopra accused the Kejriwal Government of colluding with hoarders and black-marketeers, and as a result, the prices of onions have hit sky-high. Subhash Chopra alleged that 32-ton onions were rotting in Government warehouses while people are struggling to buy onions at fair price. Chopra said that the prices of food items, including vegetables, were rising so steeply that it has become very difficult for the common people to afford them, but the Modi and Kejriwal Governments, without addressing the issue quickly, were indulging in a war of statements.
Holding Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan responsible for contributing to the steep rise in the prices of onions, Subhash Chopra said that he too seemed to be in league with hoarders and black-marketeers. Chopra said that the Modi Government has failed on all fronts, and it was because of its inability to control prices that the lives of the common people have become intolerable.
Subhash Chopra and Mukesh Sharma said that it has become very hard on the common people to afford not only vegetables, but even just plain rotis have become dearer for them. They asked why the prices of garlics have soared to Rs 300 per kg?, adding that both the Modi and Kejriwal Governments were anti-poor.
Mukesh Sharma, addressing the demonstrators, said that the Delhi Government’s move to sell onions at subsidized rates was to help benefit some select people.
He warned that if the prices of onions were brought down within 72 hours, Congress workers will gherao Union Food and Civil Supplies Minister Ram Vilas Paswan.
Those who were arrested along with Subhash Chopra and Mukesh Sharma, Jitender Kumar Kochar were woman leader and ex-MLA Darshana Ramkumar, Municipal Councillor Rinku, Amarlatha Sangwan, Guddi Devi, Puja Bahri, Akansha Ola, Indu, Pushpa Singh, Priyanka Singh, Kamlesh Chaudhary, Priya Gulati, Asha Gandhi, Ritu Singh Chouhan and Nirmala Khatri.
